What are UK & EU Economic Operators Registration and Identification (EORI) numbers?
Businesses and individuals use these numbers for identification when exchanging info with customs authorities.
Do you need one?
If you are a seller importing and storing stock into the UK or EU you will need one. From 1/1/2021 you also need an EORI to move goods between UK/EU – if you are a UK/EU seller partner using FBA to fulfil orders in both UK/EU you will require EORI starting GB to move to/from UK and EU EORI to move to/from EU.
One EU EORI number will be sufficient for all EU countries.
Please see below a simple table showing potential shipment routings and what EORI numbers you will need to successfully clear through customs.
Shipment routing | EORI Requirements for importers |
UK into EU | UK and EU EORI |
EU into UK | UK and EU EORI |
OOR into UK | UK EORI |
OOR into EU | EU EORI |
You should ensure you have the relevant EORI numbers in place before shipping as without them your freight forwarder or customs broker will not be able to clear your goods until the EORI number is in place. This could add significant storage charges to your shipment so check with your partners before shipping if there is any doubt.
You can apply for UK/EU EORI numbers yourself through the links below. Alternatively some tax agents and freight forwarders may offer a service.
